IDC Names Rational's Software Configuration Management Tools and Rational's
Analysis, Modeling and Design Tool Market Leaders in their Respective
Categories
LEXINGTON, Mass., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software Corporation
(Nasdaq: RATL), the e-development company(TM), today announced that
International Data Corporation (IDC) has named Rational's Software
Configuration Management (SCM) tools and Analysis, Modeling and Design (AMD)
tool the market share leaders in their respective categories.
IDC published these findings in reports entitled "Software Configuration
Management Tools Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005" (IDC #24811) and "Analysis,
Modeling and Design Tools Market Forecast, 2001-2005." (IDC #24809) These two
reports provide revenue and market share information for the SCM and AMD
markets, and discuss trends in these segments through 2005.
Rational's SCM tools, which include Rational ClearCase(R) and Rational
ClearQuest(R), have been the market leader in this category for three years in
a row. IDC's report states that Rational's SCM Solution had a 32.4 percent
share of the market in 2000, which represents 50.3 percent growth over 1999.
This demonstrates a significant lead over Rational's closest competitor in
this market, which had a 12.6 percent share.
This report states that SCM tools are the "glue" that holds together the
different stages of the application life cycle, and that "businesses are
becoming more dependent on high performance, secure, and reliable software
applications for their very survival." The report anticipates that the market
for SCM tools remains strong through 2005, and will maintain steady year-to-
year growth. The report is available on Rational's Web site at
http://www.rational.com/products/clearcase/idc_main.jsp.
"IDC research has demonstrated that significant return-on-investment has
been achieved through the adoption of SCM solutions such as Rational ClearCase
and Rational ClearQuest," said Dick Heiman, IDC analyst and author of
"Software Configuration Management Tools Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005."
"IT organizations faced with growing budget pressures and increasingly
geographically diversified development teams will look to SCM to improve the
efficiency and quality of their releases."
Rational's AMD tool, Rational Rose(R), was also named the market leader in
2000, with a 28.7 percent share of the market. This represents a growth rate
of nearly 50 percent over 1999. This demonstrates a significant lead over
Rational's closest competitor in this market, which had a 13.5 percent share.
Rational Rose provides full support for the software development lifecycle
through integrations with other Rational products in Rational Suite(R) and
utilizes the Unified Modeling Language (UML) for use cases, architecture,
design, implementation, and testing.
IDC predicts that the AMD industry will experience positive growth over
the next several years. This will be driven by the necessity of developers to
get applications to market quickly, the growing interest in and use of new
breed of tools, and increased interest in using UML, Java, business rules and
component adapters to construct applications. This report is available on
Rational's Web site at
http://www.rational.com/products/rose/analyst-report.jsp.
"We are very pleased that Rational's software development tools have yet
again been recognized by IDC as the clear market leaders in their respective
categories," said Eric Schurr, senior vice president of marketing for Rational
Software. "These reports acknowledge the importance of customers utilizing a
full lifecycle software development solution. With the integration of our
market leading tools into Rational Suite, we provide the only comprehensive
software development platform which enables our customers to build higher
quality software faster."
