Silicon Graphics Prism Systems Breaking Barriers to Large Data Visualization for Researchers and Film Industry at SIGGRAPH 2005

LOS ANGELES, SIGGRAPH Booth #1511, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Since
its introduction by SGI (NYSE: SGI) last fall, researchers and scientists have
turned to the award-winning Silicon Graphics Prism(TM) visualization system to
break through the barriers to visualizing large data sets. With its scalable
system architecture and large memory capabilities, Silicon Graphics Prism
drives from one to 256 Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processors, up to 16 ATI(R)
FireGL(TM) graphics accelerators and three terabytes of memory. Researchers
and scientists are able to visualize all their data rather than just a portion
of it, allowing them to make more accurate decisions and innovate without
limits.
At SIGGRAPH 2005 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, attendees will be
able to experience such breakthrough applications and results on the Silicon
Graphics Prism platform, including the recently released Silicon Graphics
Prism deskside system, in the following areas of the SGI booth:

-- The SGI Visualization Theater, driven by Digital Cinema Report's top
two products from NAB, Silicon Graphics Prism and the Sony SXRD 4K
projector, will be used as a cinema-resolution interactive environment
where speakers from the Open Source community and innovative commercial
software developers will highlight the astonishing results that are
possible within the SGI visualization ecosystem. The theater will focus
on how open standards, scalable systems, and high-resolution displays
       combine to enable innovation.
       Among the presenters:
-- Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira, vice president of Business Development
for Infiscape, will discuss VR Juggler, the leading open source
virtual reality application development framework, and how
industry is building new business cases for VR.
-- Don Burns, principal at Andes Computer Engineering, will present
OpenSceneGraph, the leading open source scene graph for
            high-performance 3D applications.
-- McKay Davis from the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute
will discuss SCIRun -- BioImage, an advanced open source toolkit
for processing and visualizing medical image volumes.
-- Scott Collins from Trolltech will present Qt(R) 4, a
high-performance C++ application framework for developing
            cross-platform visual applications.
-- Wayne Price, one of the lead engineers from the Pixel Farm will
present the 4K version of PFPlay Digital Intermediate review and
approval application on the Sony SXRD projector in the theatre.
-- James Perrin of the University of Manchester will present and also
demonstrate in the API area of the booth the AVS/Express Multipipe
Edition and Parallel Support Toolkit, which is built on SGI(R)
OpenGL(R) Multipipe SDK, and enables the rapid construction and
tuning of applications for multipipe and multiprocessor
            environments.
-- On Wednesday afternoon, SGI will show in stunning 4K resolution
the results of its collaboration with Stanford University and the
Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum to virtually unwrap a 2,000-year-old
            child mummy.
-- Open Source Innovators will demonstrate how the power of Silicon
Graphics Prism and open source software including Qt by Trolltech, VR
Juggler, SCIRun and OpenSceneGraph allow researchers to tackle their
       toughest visualization challenges.
-- Silicon Graphics APIs: With SGI Application Program Interfaces (APIs),
developers can discover the power of SGI's cross-platform development
tools, world-leading scalability tools and innovative and cost-
effective collaboration with Visual Area Networking. Open source ray
tracing, OpenGL(R) Performer, and AVS will be demonstrated in this area
as well as Next Limit which will highlight its RealFlow particle
simulation application and Maxwell Render, a photographic renderer
using the physics of light to create a heightened sense of realism.
-- Developer Porting Area to Silicon Graphics Prism: In this area,
software developers will have the opportunity to test and tune their
applications on a Silicon Graphics Prism system with multiple CPUs and
multiple graphics pipes with the assistance of an SGI engineer.

SGI, with the OpenGL Architecture Review Board, announced the widespread
industry adoption of the OpenGL 2.0 API and the OpenGL Shading Language.
3Dlabs, ATI and NVIDIA, the top manufacturers of real-time 3D graphics cards,
have all released products supporting the OpenGL 2.0 specification and the
OpenGL Shading Language, ensuring its widespread availability. UGS, one of the
largest CAD engineering software developers, has also included OpenGL Shading
Language in its products, allowing its customers to create the highest level
of realism ever achieved.
One of the most important and enduring standards in the computer industry,
OpenGL 2.0 presents a revolution in graphics by providing high-level access to
the programmable features of modern graphics processors and is an important
step in creating photo-realistic, real-time 3D graphics. (See release at

Also, the company announced that San Diego State University (SDSU) has
used Silicon Graphics Prism visualization systems for natural disaster
mitigation and response, homeland security, remote sensing and environmental
monitoring, global sharing of information and collaborative visualization, and
grid computing.
For example, when the horrific tsunami arose from the Indian Ocean on
December 26, 2004, SDSU was one of the first of any organizations to acquire
high-resolution before-and-after satellite imagery of Banda Aceh, Indonesia,
where the worst devastation occurred. Because of the high-performance and
speed of the Silicon Graphics Prism system, the Visualization Center was able
to process the high-resolution satellite imagery and deliver high-fidelity 3D
geospatial visualization and maps to relief workers and government officials
so they could establish initial refugee camps and provide emergency medical
care. (See release at http://www.sgi.com/newsroom)
Pixel Farm and SGI also announced a collaboration to develop a playback
and review platform built around PFPlay and the Silicon Graphics Prism
platform. The first system will support 2K and 4K play back, but can be scaled
to higher resolutions when required using the unique SGI multi-pipe
architecture.
Pixel Farm PFPlay, the leading review and quality assurance solution for
DI, is designed to take full advantage of new digital display technologies,
such as the Sony SXRD projector. For the first time it will be possible for
production facilities and studios to review dailies, shots or an entire
production at 4K allowing even the slightest flaws to be identified and fixed
before any film is printed. (See release at http://www.sgi.com/newsroom)
