Quenching Our Neighbors' Thirst - Tyco Water Secures Significant Export Success

NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Australian steel water
pipe manufacturer Tyco Water Pty Ltd, a business unit of Tyco Engineered
Products & Services, has secured its first major export contract into the
Middle East, beating international competition to win a significant deal worth
USD $35 million.
Under the contract, more than 13,000 steel water pipes will be
manufactured at Tyco Water's world-class plants in Perth and Brisbane, and
shipped to the United Arab Emirates to become the key component of a project
to transport desalinated water from the capital Abu Dhabi, to the eastern
regions of their country.
Tyco Water's Manager Marketing Steel Pipeline Systems, Mr. David Brady,
said the contract further proved the technical advantages and world
competitiveness of Tyco Water's innovative water pipeline technology.
"What set us apart from all the other suppliers was the speed of
construction offered by our patented SINTAJOINT rubber ring joint system. The
pipes are manufactured with a coating of polyethylene that wraps around the
end and under the rubber ring joint. No welding or corrosion protection of
the joint is required in the field. The 12 meter long pipes are joined
together in minutes, literally," Mr. Brady explained.
This ease of construction comes without compromise to the pipeline
performance.
"This pipeline system has been specifically developed for strategic water
mains, where our customers require in excess of a 100 year life. We have been
producing it now for over 30 years, with millions of meters in service and the
near perfect performance our customers have witnessed keeps them coming back
for more."
"We hope that this will be the first of many projects in the Middle East
where our SINTAJOINT system is utilized. And with the worldwide increase in
demand for water transmission pipelines, we are confident that other countries
will also be employing this innovative pipeline system before too long."
The project with the United Arab Emirates not only spells great gains for
state and national economies in Australia, but has a positive impact on the
local job market as well. According to Tyco Water's Market Manager -- WA,
Denis Ericson, an additional 60 full time local people from Kwinana to service
the eight-month contract, taking staff at the plant to a peak of 100.
"We are extremely proud of the fact that the products we manufacture are
essentially 100 per cent Australian," Mr Ericson said.
"All of the significant elements involved in the manufacturing process,
such as the steel, the lining and coating materials and the logistics will be
sourced locally wherever possible, ensuring significant flow-on benefits to
associated suppliers and subcontractors and continuing Tyco Water's strong
practice of supporting local industries."
