CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff
Professional Colin Montgomerie has earned his third international victory of
the 2001 season, winning the Volvo Scandinavian Masters yesterday. This is
Montgomerie's second win over the last month on the PGA European Tour and
virtually assures him of a spot on this year's European Ryder Cup team. In
each of Montgomerie's victories this season, he has relied on the superior
performance of Callaway Golf's Rule 35(R) ball and an Odyssey(R) White Hot(R)
Putter.
"It's great to be back in the winners' circle. I played well all week, but
I think the reason I won is that I holed out very well," said Montgomerie, who
used a Rule 35 Firmfeel(TM) (red logo) ball and Odyssey White Hot 3 Putter at
the Scandinavian Masters. "Every time I missed a green I seemed to chip up
well and hole good putts. I won at the beginning of July and now I've won at
the beginning of August. I can't wait for September."
Montgomerie's 14-under-par 274 was good for a one-stroke win at the
Scandinavian Masters. Montgomerie is the first player to win the event three
times, and he now has 26 PGA European Tour victories in his illustrious
career. His latest victory lifted him to sixth place on the European Ryder
Cup points list and eighth on the Volvo Order of Merit, which he has won a
record seven times.
Montgomerie used a total of 11 Callaway Golf(R) clubs at the Scandinavian
Masters, including a Big Bertha(R) Hawk Eye(R) VFT(TM) Pro Series Titanium
Driver, a Big Bertha Steelhead(TM) 3-wood, Steelhead X-14(R) Irons and his
Odyssey White Hot 3 Putter. The event's runner-up also used an Odyssey White
Hot 3 Putter. Five of the top 12 finishers used Odyssey Putters -- three were
Odyssey White Hot models, and two were Odyssey TriHot(TM) 3 Putters.
There were also 31 Big Bertha ERC(R) II Titanium Drivers in play at the
Scandinavian Masters, with two golfers using ERC II Drivers to post top-10
finishes. Of the 31 ERC II Drivers in play, 24 were used by non-staff
professional, meaning they used the driver without financial incentive.
Through August 5, Callaway Golf leads the PGA European Tour in driver usage.
Callaway Golf also had a successful showing at the Weetabix Women's
British Open, where the Company's fairway woods were No. 1 in usage. Ten of
the top 11 finishers at the event used fairway woods made by Callaway Golf,
including the champion. There were 260 Callaway Golf fairway woods in play at
the Women's British Open, compared to 51 for the nearest competitor. Through
August 5, 70.6 percent of all fairway woods put in play on the LPGA Tour have
been made by Callaway Golf.
