Milwaukee Academy of Science Excels in Core Subject Areas
NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Edison Schools (Nasdaq: EDSN),
the nation's largest private manager of public schools, announced today that
its charter school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Academy of Science
has posted commendable marks on the Wisconsin Student Assessment Knowledge
& Concepts Exam (WKCE), which serves as the states' primary test of academic
accountability. In the core subject areas of reading, language arts, and math,
Edison Milwaukee students made an overall average gain of 7.3 percentile
points versus the state with average gains in core subjects of 3.7 percentile
points.
Edison fourth graders and eighth graders took the WKCE exam, however, as
this was the first year eighth graders took the exam, their scores were
baseline only. Fourth graders made strong gains in most WKCE subject areas.
From spring 2001 to spring 2002, fourth graders made gains of 11 percentile
points in reading, 9 percentile points in language arts and 2 percentile
points in math, respectively. They lost some ground in science where they
decreased by 3 percentile points and 9 percentile points in social studies.
Across all subject areas, the fourth graders made an overall gain of
2 percentile points, and as stated earlier, the overall average gain was
7.3 percentile points in the core subject areas.
In the fall of 2000, Edison Schools launched Milwaukee Academy of Science,
its first charter school in Milwaukee serving students in grades K-8. In fall
2001, Edison opened Milwaukee Urban League Academy of Business and Economics,
which serves students in grades K-5. Results on the WKCE at Milwaukee Urban
League were baseline only. Since inception, both schools have experienced
growth in their enrollments as a complement to their academic successes.
"We are very pleased with these results," said John Chubb, Chief Education
Officer. "Our Milwaukee school's most recent gains on the WKCE demonstrate the
level of commitment of teachers, staff and students to improving levels of
achievement and proficiency. In Milwaukee Urban League and the Milwaukee
Academy of Science, Edison has created a positive educational option for
parents and children in the Milwaukee area."
