Cepheid's U.S. Army Development Contract Expanded for Integrated Pathogen Detection

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Cepheid (Nasdaq: CPHD) today
announced that the United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command
(USAMRMC) has expanded the scope and increased funding for its development
contract from $1.35M to $1.9M for the development of accelerated, fully
automated DNA analysis systems that process and detect pathogenic spores.
All systems will be designed to be portable and will incorporate sample
concentration, spore lysis, DNA amplification and detection. Sample
preparation will be integrated in a unique, disposable cartridge that will be
based upon Cepheid's technology platforms in microfluidics and micromachining.
Cepheid's patented I-CORE(R) technology will be integrated as the
amplification and detection platform for the units. The first prototype is
scheduled to be delivered to Army investigators before the end of the year
with final prototype deliveries planned to occur during the first half of
2001.
Cepheid is applying proprietary microfluidic and microelectronic
technologies to the development of fast, versatile, miniaturized systems that
can perform all the steps required to analyze complex biological
samples -- including sample preparation, amplification and detection -- with a
single platform. Cepheid is initially focused on the detection of DNA and RNA
in such application areas as life sciences research, clinical diagnostics,
industrial testing and pharmacogenomics.
