American Eagle Outfitters Reports Record July Sales of $110.5 Million, An Increase of 8.2%

    WARRENDALE, Pa., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced that total
sales for the four-week period ended August 3, 2002 increased 8.2% to
$110.5 million, compared to $102.0 million for the four-week period ended
August 4, 2001.  Total sales for the period include $5.7 million from the
Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $6.6 million for the corresponding
period last year.
    Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined
4.6% for the July period.  Consolidated comparable store sales, which include
American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 5.4% for the month
compared to the corresponding period ended August 4, 2001.  Bluenotes/Thriftys
comparable store sales declined 16.3% in July compared to last year.
    Total sales for the thirteen-week period ended August 3, 2002 increased
9.2% to $319.2 million from $292.4 million for the thirteen-week period ended
August 4, 2001.  Total sales for the period include $18.8 million from the
Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $21.2 million for the corresponding
period last year.
    Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined
4.8% for the thirteen-week period ended August 3, 2002.  Consolidated
comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys
stores, decreased 5.5% for the thirteen-week period compared to the
corresponding period ended August 4, 2001.  Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable
store sales declined 13.9% for the period compared to last year.
    Total sales for the twenty-six week period ended August 3, 2002 increased
9.8% to $597.1 million, compared to $543.9 million for the twenty-six week
period ended August 4, 2001.  Total sales for the period include $36.3 million
from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $41.6 million for the
corresponding period last year.
    Comparable store sales for the American Eagle Outfitters stores declined
4.9% for the twenty-six week period ended August 3, 2002.  Consolidated
comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys
stores, decreased 5.7% for the twenty-six week period compared to the
corresponding period last year.  Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales
declined 15.7% for the period compared to the corresponding period last year.
