ATLANTA, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Armin G. Brecher, Chair of the Executive
Committee and the Board of Partners of Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy LLP,
announced today that the Firm's Board of Partners has nominated James J.
McAlpin, Jr. to succeed him when his term ends in March 2004. A partners
meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, August 12 at 5:00 p.m. to vote on Mr.
McAlpin's nomination. Mr. McAlpin has served in a number of leadership
positions in the Firm, most recently as the Chair of the Corporate &
Technology Department and as a member of the Firm's Executive Committee. He
joined the Firm in 1985 and was the youngest member to be elected to the
Firm's Board of Partners in 1997. He previously led the Firm's Business
Transactions and Corporate Finance Practice and has chaired the Firm's
Compensation Committee.
"I have total confidence in Jim McAlpin as do all of the Firm's partners.
He is a very qualified partner and is the perfect person to implement our
growth plans. Jim and our next generation of lawyers will be most affected by
our strategic plans," added Mr. Brecher. After the end of his term, Mr.
Brecher will continue in a client relations role with many of the Firm's most
significant clients. In addition to returning to the active practice of law,
Mr. Brecher will serve as Chairman Emeritus and will continue his leadership
of the Firm's civic, pro bono and community activities. His current
activities include his leadership roles with Central Atlanta Progress, the
Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the American Cancer Society, American Heart
Association, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Atlanta, Board of Visitors of Emory
University, and the One Ninety One Club.
Walt Moeling, a senior partner with Powell Goldstein and Practice Group
Leader for the Financial Institutions practice added, "I have known Jim and
practiced with him for the eighteen years he has been with the Firm. The
Board of Partners made an excellent choice in nominating Jim as the Firm's
next Chairman. He will build on the strong foundation Armin has established
and continue executing our growth plans with enthusiasm and vision."
Commenting on the transition, Mr. McAlpin said, "The vision and strategy
for the Firm's future growth makes this an exciting time to be involved in
Firm leadership. I look forward to the opportunity and am gratified for the
trust the Firm's Partners have placed in me to fulfill this role. We are very
grateful to Armin Brecher for the significant contributions he has made to
lead Powell Goldstein over the past five years and for his leadership in the
implementation of this planned succession for when I take on this role in
March 2004. We are proud to be one of the few law firms with leadership that
has the foresight to plan an orderly succession."
McAlpin, 45, is a double graduate from the University of Alabama,
receiving his undergraduate degree in 1981 and his J. D. in 1984. He is
actively involved in the Association for Corporate Growth (and is a past-
