American Eagle Outfitters Reports Record July Sales of $102.0 Million, An Increase of 53.2%, Comparable Store Sales Rise 3.7%

    WARRENDALE, Pa., Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ --
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced total sales for
the four weeks ended August 4, 2001 increased 53.2% to $102.0 million from
$66.6 million for the period ended July 29, 2000.  Total sales for the four
weeks ended August 4, 2001 include $6.6 million from the Bluenotes/Thriftys
operation.  U.S. same store sales for the four weeks ended August 4, 2001
increased 3.7% compared to the corresponding four-week period ended
August 5, 2000.
    Total sales for the second quarter ended August 4, 2001 increased 39.9% to
$292.4 million from $209.0 million for the second quarter ended July 29, 2000.
Total sales for the thirteen-week period include $21.2 million from the
Bluenotes/Thriftys operation.  U.S. same store sales for the thirteen-week
period increased 4.6% compared to the corresponding thirteen-week period last
year.
    Total sales for the twenty-six week period ended August 4, 2001 increased
40.6% to $543.9 million from $387.0 million for the twenty-six week period
ended July 29, 2000.  Total sales for the period include $41.6 million from
the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation.  U.S. same store sales for the 2001 period
rose 6.2% compared to the corresponding period last year.

Eagle brand of relaxed, clean, and versatile clothing for 16 to 34 year olds,
providing high-quality merchandise at affordable prices.  AE's lifestyle
collection offers casual basics like cargos complemented by fashion looks in
