Independent Workforce Can Benefit From Short-Term Medical Coverage, Says Fortis Health

    MILWAUKEE, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly one-third of today's workforce is
made up of independent workers and contractors. Most often, these independent
and freelance workers do not qualify for any employer-paid health insurance
benefits, or, if they do, they may experience gaps in coverage as they move
between assignments.
According to Rajeev Bal, vice president, specialty products at Fortis
Health, a national leader in providing short-term health insurance, the most
cost-effective solution for many of these independent workers can be Short
Term Medical coverage.

Continuing coverage is critical to workers
"This is a large segment of our country's workforce," Bal explains.
"Continuing health insurance coverage is important for independent workers,
but sometimes with the high costs, they decide to go without, putting them at
even greater financial risk. Fortis Health's Short Term Medical offers an
affordable answer for these people."
Short Term Medical coverage is designed for generally healthy individuals
in a variety of situations. It's designed to cover a gap in health insurance
coverage that might range from one to six months. Typical situations include:
    -- Independent workers
-- Workers who have been laid off or are between jobs
-- College students who lose parent plan coverage upon graduation
-- New employees stuck in a health insurance "waiting period"
    -- Temporary or seasonal employees
-- Early retirees with a short wait for Medicare coverage

"For independent workers, the flexibility of Short Term Medical is
invaluable," says Bal. "Fortis Health enables individuals to customize the
plan to meet their needs. For example, workers can choose between one and six
months of coverage, apply using several different methods and choose the
deductible that best fits their needs."

                           Easy and affordable plan
Fortis Health has made purchasing a short-term health insurance plan
surprisingly affordable for individuals and families. For example, a
45-year-old male from the San Jose area can pay as little as $205.20 for a
90-day coverage period. A Cincinnati woman, age 35, can pay just $119.70 for
a 90-day term. Family coverage is also available. Plus, customers can choose
more or less expensive coverage by selecting a lower or higher deductible.
Coverage may begin as soon as the next day.
Applying for coverage is simple at Fortis Health's short-term insurance
web site, http://www.temporaryinsurance.com , which provides more detailed
information on plan benefits. In addition, customers may buy plans by calling
