ATLANTA, GA UNITED STATES
ATLANTA, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Power received 14 proposals
from four different companies in response to its request for proposal (RFP)
for 1,300 megawatts of electricity to meet customer demand in 2012. All the
bids combined represented more than 8,900 megawatts of electricity.

Most of the bids were in the 300- to 800-megawatt range, indicating
that some combination of bids would be needed to meet the 1,300-megawatt
request. The 2012 solicitation was open to all types of generation, however
the bids Georgia Power received came only from companies who propose
operating natural gas units to generate electricity. The bids ranged in
duration from 10-year and 15-year proposals to 30-year proposals.
All of the bids were for generation from within the footprint of
Southern Company, Georgia Power's parent, which includes Georgia, the
panhandle of Florida, most of Alabama and the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.
"The number of companies bidding and the number of bids submitted is an
indication that there is a healthy, competitive wholesale generation market
in the Southeast," said Jeff Burleson, director of Georgia Power's Resource
Planning department.
The RFP process is part of Georgia Power's recently approved integrated
resource plan, which identifies future need for electricity and helps
Georgia keep up with the continued growth in the demand for electricity.
The bids will be analyzed by the company and Accion Group, an
Independent Evaluator for the Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC), to
determine the viability of the projects from a generation and transmission
standpoint, as well as to identify the low-cost bidders, according to
Burleson. The next step will be to determine a short list of the best bids
by mid-February 2008.
Contracts for the winning bids will then be submitted to the GPSC in
May 2008 for certification. The new generation would need to be on line by
June 1, 2012.
Even after meeting the 2012 needs, Georgia Power will still have
adequate room for additional power purchase agreements in future years.
Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, one of the
nation's largest generators of electricity. The company is an
investor-owned, tax-paying utility with rates well below the national
average. Georgia Power serves 2.3 million customers in all but four of
Georgia's 159 counties.
