PITTSBURGH, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- PENNDOT and Trumbull Corporation will
reopen the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel three weeks ahead of schedule at
9:00 a.m., Saturday, August 16. Both the inbound and outbound bridge and
tunnel will be closed from Friday, August 15 at 10:00 p.m. until Saturday
morning at 9:00 a.m.
The outbound bridge and tunnel will remain closed for one week after the
reopening of the inbound lanes to remove crossovers and detours, and will
reopen by Saturday, August 23.
The most significant continuing detour will affect motorists heading
eastbound for Oakland and I-376 (Parkway East). Rather than proceeding
through the newly opened tunnel, this traffic will continue to use the detour
Route 51 to the West End and Fort Duquesne Bridges to the interstate connector
ramp to the Parkway East. The Parkway East ramp from the Ft. Pitt Bridge will
be completed in late September.
Some traffic restrictions and detours will continue for one week after the
reopening to allow workers to remove crossovers, detour barrels and signs and
to complete the opening of access ramps, line painting and signal changes.
Work areas remaining after August 23 include the Route 51 turnaround and
signals at west Liberty Avenue, Route 51 bridge painting, Route 51/I-279
crossover, restoration of the north end of the Liberty Tunnel and McArdle
Roadway intersection, and reconstruction of the island at the intersection of
Ft. Pitt Boulevard and Commonwealth Place.
These changes will conclude the $84-million bridge and tunnel
reconstruction final phase of the ten-year, $200+ million project.
