RENO, Nev., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IGT has received licensing
rights to two of the Sixties' most memorable game shows -- The Dating Game(TM)
and The Newlywed Game(TM).
"IGT will draw from the wealth of classic audio and video available for
both shows to create new gaming machines," said Joe Kaminkow, IGT's vice
president of game design. "There is so much fun -- and funny -- material for
our game designers to work with. We're going to have a blast developing these
two themes."
Legendary game show producer Chuck Barris created both shows in the
mid-Sixties. The Dating Game(TM), which debuted in late 1965 with host Jim
Lange, was the premier game show for singles. Lange would introduce the
bachelor contestants with the opening line, " ... and he-e-re they ar-r-re!"
On one side of a partition were three bachelors, who answered quirky questions
from a woman concealed on the other side of the partition. During a
commercial break, the woman would ponder the answers and decide which bachelor
she'd choose for a date. She'd first meet the two men she didn't select.
When the man she selected was introduced to her, Lange would describe where
the couple would go on their dream date.
The Newlywed Game(TM) debuted in 1966 and has been beloved by television
audiences for nearly four decades. This game show format had four newly
married couples trying to earn points by predicting how their spouses would
answer questions about each other. The husbands were secluded offstage while
the wives answered three 5-point questions. The husbands were then brought
out and asked how they thought their wives answered those questions. The
roles were reversed in round two, with each question worth 10 points. Those
point totals, plus a 25-point bonus question at the end, determined the winner
of that day's grand prize.
IGT's The Dating Game(TM) and The Newlywed Game(TM) gaming machines will
be unveiled at the Global Gaming Expo Sept. 16-18 in Las Vegas. It has not
been determined when the new machines will be available in casinos.
