FAA and Raytheon Continue National Airspace System Modernization with Commissioning of First New Air Traffic Control Beacon Interrogator Secondary Surveillance Radar

MARLBORO, Mass., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has commissioned into service the first production
Raytheon ATCBI-6 secondary surveillance radar at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.
This initiates the national production deployment of up to 128 ATCBI-6s for
modernization of the FAA's en route radar network.
The Tinker AFB system, which supplies critical radar data to the FAA's air
route traffic control centers in Fort Worth, Texas, and Kansas City, Mo., was
commissioned last month.
The ATCBI-6, with Mode S selective addressing capability, replaces aging
civil air traffic control radar beacon systems used by the FAA to obtain
information from en route aircraft, including its identification, altitude,
airspeed and direction. The new radar systems integrate with existing primary
surveillance radars operated by the FAA and the Department of Defense (DoD) in
support of the National Airspace System. Raytheon is also supplying its
latest generation monopulse secondary surveillance radar (MSSR) for ATCBI-6 to
both the DoD and FAA as part of the ASR-11 Digital Airport Surveillance Radar
program. Raytheon is the world's leading supplier of MSSRs with sales of over
300 systems to more than twenty-five nations.
"The ATCBI-6 will provide the FAA with significantly reduced life cycle
costs," said Bob Eckel, Raytheon's vice president of air traffic management
systems. "The FAA's commissioning of the first ATCBI-6 is yet another
significant milestone in the modernization of the National Airspace System."
With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), is a
global technology leader in defense, government and commercial electronics and
business and special mission aircraft.
