NEWARK, N.J., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Worldwide Flight Services (WFS),
formerly known as AMR Services, was selected by AirTran to perform aviation
services for the airline's flights at Newark (EWR), New Jersey beginning in
July.
Worldwide's new contract with AirTran includes handling passenger
services, aircraft cleaning and mail services for the airline's four daily
flights between Newark and Atlanta, GA. In addition, Worldwide also handles
some of AirTran's service operations at the world's third busiest airport,
Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW).
The new contract adds 21 new jobs to Worldwide's growing operation. In
May, Worldwide Flight Services was also selected by Avianca Airlines, the
national airline of Colombia, to perform ramp, passenger and skycap services
for four Boeing 757 flights weekly at the Newark airport. That two-year
contract created 30 new jobs.
"This new AirTran contract is an important part of our company's continued
expansion," said Worldwide Senior Vice President of Marketing, John Vittas.
"AirTran is a growing presence throughout the country and we are proud to work
with them. We are actually ahead of our planned expansion both to new airport
locations and for growth at our current locations. We realize the trust the
airlines place in our services, and we intend to exceed their expectations."
AirTran initiated new nonstop service between Newark and Atlanta in July.
With the new flights, AirTran offers connecting service between Newark and
21 cities through the airline's Atlanta hub. AirTran is the second largest
airline serving Atlanta, the world's busiest airport, with more than 130 daily
departures from Hartsfield International Airport. Throughout its total
system, AirTran operates more than 275 daily departures.
AirTran Airways, recipient of Entrepreneur magazine's 1998 award for
"Best Domestic Low-Fare Airline," currently operates a fleet of 49 jet
aircraft. AirTran will begin flying the new Boeing 717 this fall. The
company has ordered 50 of the new aircraft. AirTran is a subsidiary of
AirTran Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAIR).
