YONKERS, N.Y., March 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Advanced Viral Research Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: ADVR) today announced that
Dr. Howard Young, a leading Immunologist and member of a world-renowned cancer
research institute, has joined the Company's Scientific Advisory Board. The
other members of the Scientific Advisory Board include Dr. George Canellos,
the William Rosenberg Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and
former Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology at Harvard's Dana Farber
Cancer Institute; Dr. Michael Harris, Director of Tomorrows Children's
Institute for Blood and Cancer Disorders and Chief of Pediatric
Hematology-Oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center; Dr. James
D'Olimpio, the Director of Supportive Oncology & Palliative Care at North
Shore University Hospital; and Ms. Carol Armenti, an advocate for women's
health and the founder and Executive Director for the Center for Cervical
Health, a patient advocacy organization primarily devoted to cervical health
issues in the U.S.
"Dr. Young brings in-depth research expertise and wide-ranging knowledge
in the field of immunology, including the basic science of immunmodulation, to
the Scientific Advisory Board," stated Shalom Z. Hirschman, MD, CEO and
President of Advanced Viral Research Corp. "Dr. Young's broad knowledge of
immunology will provide additional expertise and counsel to our scientists as
we move forward with the development of our immunomodulator drug, Product R.
We will also benefit from his expertise as we advance our discovery program of
future drugs based on the rich chemistry of peptide nucleic acids, as
represented by Product R. Dr. Young's rigorous experimental approach to
scientific problems will aid in the design of our experimental protocols as we
advance Product R through the regulatory bodies."
"I am excited about the opportunity to join my colleagues on the
Scientific Advisory Board in helping to guide the scientists of Advanced Viral
as they explore the full potential for this immununodulator," said Dr. Young.
"I look forward to working with Dr. Hirschman, the other members of the Board,
and the Company's scientific team as we explore the opportunities with
Product R."
Dr. Young, a world-renowned immunologist, received a B.S. degree, magna
cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts in 1969 and M.S. and Ph.D.
degrees in microbiology from the University of Washington in 1971 and 1974,
respectively. Dr. Young currently serves on the staff of one of the world's
leading cancer research and training institutions. Dr. Young has held many
important positions in the world of science such as Chair of the Immunology
Division of the American Society for Microbiology from 1996-1997. Dr. Young
has also been elected to serve as Vice President of the International Society
for Interferon and Cytokine Research in 2002 and 2003 and as President in
2004 and 2005. During 2001, Dr. Young was elected a fellow to the American
Academy of Microbiology.
Dr. Young has authored/co-authored over 200 research papers in the field
of cellular and molecular immunology. He is a member of the editorial boards
of the "Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research," "The Journal of
Biological Chemistry" (2nd term beginning July 1, 2002), "Genes and Immunity,"
and served on the editorial board of "The Journal of Immunology" from
1997-2001. Dr. Young is Editor-in-Chief of the "Newsletter of the
International Society of Interferon and Cytokine Research."
Product R is being investigated as a non-toxic peptide-nucleic acid-type
immunomodulator that appears to stimulate the proinflammatory responses
required to combat viral infections such as AIDS and human papilloma virus and
to dampen aberrant autoimmune-type inflammatory responses, such as occur in
patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, Product R has been termed a
"switch type" immunomodulator. Product R is also being studied for the
promise shown in its ability to mitigate the toxic side effects of other
drugs, including those used to treat HIV infection and chemotherapeutic drugs
employed in the treatment of cancers.
