ADVR's Product R Granted Patent for Topical Use In Treatment of Skin Diseases, Eye Afflictions

    YONKERS, N.Y., March 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Advanced Viral Research
Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: ADVR) today announced that it has been awarded U.S.
Patent No.6,355,226 entitled "Topical Treatment of Skin Disease and Eye
Afflictions." The patent protects the use of Product R, the non-toxic
peptide-nucleic acid immunomodulator developed by Advanced Viral, for use in
the topical treatment of skin diseases and eye afflictions.
In October 2001 the Company was granted a U.S. Patent for the preparation
and composition of Product R.
"These two patents provide the necessary intellectual property protection
for the use of Product R in the treatment of genital warts, which was the
subject of a recently completed Phase 1 clinical trial," said Dr. Shalom Z.
Hirschman, President & CEO of Advanced Viral. "In addition, these patents
protect our rights to pursue the topical use of Product R for other viral
infections, and may make it easier for us to introduce Product R to potential
marketing partners."
Advanced Viral's scientific team, led by Dr. Hirschman, defined the
methods for treating patients having viral skin infections, including those
caused by human papilloma virus (genital warts and common digital and plantar
warts), herpes zoster virus (shingles), and herpes simplex virus (genital
herpes) using Product R topically either alone or in combination with other
drugs; and viral eye infections, including infection with herpes simplex
virus.
On March 11, 2002, Advanced Viral announced that it had submitted the
results of a Phase 1 study for the topical use of Product R in the treatment
of genital warts caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV) to
the FDA. No dermatologic toxicity was observed with Product R in the Phase 1
trial. The data accrued in the Phase 1 study form the basis for the Phase 2
protocol to be submitted to the FDA
    Product R is being investigated as a non-toxic peptide-nucleic acid-type
immunomodulator that appears to stimulate the proinflammatory responses
required to combat viral infections such as AIDS and human papilloma virus and
to dampen aberrant autoimmune-type inflammatory responses, such as occur in
patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, Product R has been termed a
"switch type" immunomodulator. Product R is also being studied for the
promise shown in its ability to mitigate the toxic side effects of other
drugs, including those used to treat HIV infection and chemotherapeutic drugs
employed in the treatment of cancers.

of any other countries. There is no assurance that the Company will be able

R. The Company undertakes no obligation to update or revise the information
