ADVR Names Mayr Communications to Handle Public/Investor Relations; Firm Brings Extensive Pharmaceutical Industry Experience

    YONKERS, N.Y., May 23 /PRNewswire/ --
Advanced Viral Research Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: ADVR) today announced the
appointment of Mayr Communications Inc., a New Jersey-based strategic
communications firm, to manage the Company's public and investor relations
activities. The principals in the company have extensive experience in
developing and executing comprehensive communications, media and investor
relations programs for pharmaceutical, consumer products and technology
clients.
"I am committed to establishing a comprehensive communications program
that provides all of our stakeholders with timely information about the
progress of the clinical development of Product R, our novel immunomodulator,"
said Eli Wilner, Chairman of the Board of ADVR. "I am convinced that by
broadly communicating our development and clinical milestones, and by better
defining the therapeutic potential represented by Product R; shareholders,
clinicians, potential strategic partners and others will gain a more complete
appreciation of the quality of our science and the overall value of our
Company."
Founded in 1998, Mayr Communications is a strategic communications
consulting firm. The staff brings more than 50 years of combined experience
in results-driven investor relations, media and public relations, government
affairs and issues management to the assignment. Founder Charles Mayr has
extensive experience in developing and implementing strategic communications
programs for several pharmaceutical companies, including more than 15 years of
experience working for Barr Laboratories, Inc. and Sterling Winthrop Inc (the
former pharmaceutical subsidiary of Eastman Kodak). He has also worked with
Halsey Pharmaceuticals, the National Pharmaceutical Alliance, the Generic
Pharmaceutical Association, and USA Detergents, among others.
"Communication is especially critical at this time," Wilner continued.
"We recently received approval for Phase 2 clinical studies in the United
States for the topical treatment of genital warts with Product R. We are also
awaiting approval of the Ministry of Health in Israel to initiate clinical
studies of the systemic uses of Product R in potentially large therapeutic
categories. As we move forward, it will be essential to have the processes in
place that enable us to share information as broadly and effectively as
possible."
The proposed clinical studies in Israel will examine the potential use of
Product R in treating cachexia (body wasting) in patients with neoplasias of
lymphocytic cells, i.e., acute lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkins lymphoma and
non-Hodgkins lymphoma; treating cachexia in patients with solid tumors such as
cancers of the colon, kidney, lung and breast; and as salvage therapy in
patients with AIDS who have failed highly active anti-retroviral therapy
(HAART).
    ADVR's Product R is being investigated as a non-toxic peptide-nucleic
acid-type immunomodulator that appears to stimulate the proinflammatory
responses required to combat viral infections such as AIDS and human papilloma
virus and to dampen aberrant autoimmune-type inflammatory responses, such as
occur in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, Product R has been
termed a "switch type" immunomodulator. Product R is also being studied for
the promise shown in its ability to mitigate the toxic side effects of other
drugs, including those used to treat HIV infection and chemotherapeutic drugs
employed in the treatment of cancers.
