Yoga for Peace intends to move New Yorkers beyond their mourning and begin
to embrace and celebrate life. Yoga for Peace signifies the importance of
demonstrating a shared commitment to lasting peace and freedom around the
world by offering a belief system that empowers the individual with love,
compassion and forgiveness.
"The meaning of the Sanskrit word 'yoga' is 'union,' and it is union that
New Yorkers seek after the division and discord of September 11," explains
Jacqueline Stolte, Director of Yoga for Peace. "The goal of yoga is to foster
peace and happiness in our hearts and in our world."
"Most of our suffering is self-inflicted and is the result of fear-based
thinking says author, participant and Doggy Yoga instructor Bruce Van Horn.
"The ancient Yogis understood that after millions of years of evolution we had
become the masters of our world, we no longer had to live in fear or repeat
predatory-prey patterns of behavior. Using the wisdom of nature they derived
a daily practice to overcome ego-based/fear-based thinking to promote higher
consciousness. If competing species can evolve to not only cooperate, but to
share healing energy and love, there is great hope for mankind."
Yoga for Peace has secured the endorsement of Swami Ramananda, the
President of the Integral Yoga Institute, one of New York City's oldest and
most well respected yoga studios. Other studios supporting the event include
Om Yoga, Jivamukti, Be Yoga, Virayoga, Equinox, and Go Yoga.

Incorporated in New York State and operating as a non-profit organization
under New York Citiworks, Inc. In 2004, Yoga for Peace will sponsor similar
gatherings in Boston, Chicago, Boulder, Seattle, and Los Angeles. In time,
Yoga for Peace's annual event could become a global celebration.
