Teaming With Industry-Leading Display, Software and Hardware Vendors,
Sun Offers Affordable, Highly Scalable End-to-End Platform Options
LOS ANGELES, SIGGRAPH CONFERENCE, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ --
Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) uses the Siggraph Conference as its
stage to showcase new technology demos and tout new and ongoing relationships
with industry leaders in the visualization, simulation and digital media
markets. Sun's continued momentum matches its vision for growth opportunities
in these markets by shifting their economic barriers through increased volumes
and lower price points.
With Sun's comprehensive range of workstations, servers and graphics
products on display in booth #1201, Sun is showcasing demos for its
server-based graphics and new 24" flat-panel LCD monitor, as well as products
announced during the past year, including the UltraSPARC(TM) III-based Sun(TM)
Blade 1000 workstation, the sub-$1,000 Sun Blade 100 workstation, and the
sub-$1,000 Sun(TM) Expert3D-Lite graphics card.
"It's been a tremendous year for Sun as we've built partnerships with
industry leaders in the visualization, simulation and digital media markets,"
said Fred Kohout, director of marketing, Technical Market Products,
Sun Microsystems. "We are emerging as a driving force among system vendors in
these markets, and we're ready to deliver the scalable, highly integrated
platforms that customers require in these demanding environments."
Major industry announcements for Sun have included deals with
MultiGen-Paradigm, a leading provider of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)
software solutions for the visual simulation industry; Side Effects Software,
a premier software vendor for visual effects and animation; Creative Labs/EMU,
a leading computer audio solution provider; and immersive display technology
leaders Panoram, Mechdyne, TAN and Trimension. Additionally, Sun has provided
the high quality graphics and hardware platforms at visualization facilities
around the world, including installations at Stola, a leading Italian
automotive supplier; Warwick Collaboration Center, a PTC-backed 3D-immersive
facility hosted at the University of Warwick in the U.K.; Landmark Graphics in
Canada, which built its advanced Decisionarium collaboration system with Sun
technology; and RWTH AAchen University, a leading supercomputing and
visualization facility in Germany.

Kewazinga Corp.
"Kewazinga is excited to work with Sun Microsystems in the application of
Sun hardware and its Solaris Operating Environment to Kewazinga's
patent-pending immersive video system. We believe that the multiprocessing
capabilities of the Sun platform will enable Kewazinga to capture and process
its one-of-a-kind video experiences in real time. In addition, with the
Kewazinga system being used in a variety of applications, including sports,
entertainment, education and merchandising, Sun's set top box technology can
assist Kewazinga in its goal of providing truly interactive video to the
consumer in a value-added package of services."

Landmark Graphics Canada
"True collaboration is enabled by using technology that scales from the
user's desktop all the way to the large-scale Decisionarium. It is critical
for any technology to be available in the context of a user's everyday life in
order to revolutionize work processes. The proliferation of Decisionariums in
the oil and gas industry is proof of the value of visualization. Our facility
is really designed with the byline: 'visualization for the masses.' In other
words, we are trying to bridge the gap between the end user's native
environment -- the desktop -- and the Decisionarium. We believe that the
combination of this facility, which utilizes Sun workstations, servers and
graphics technology with Landmark's unparalleled suite of integrated
applications, will facilitate a revolution in the way that individual
geophysical and geological asset team members will work together."

MultiGen-Paradigm
"This relationship allows us to extend our support of the visual
simulation community by offering our cutting-edge performance and realtime 3D
solutions on the Solaris platform," said Sandeep Divekar, president of
MultiGen-Paradigm. "Because of the advances in hardware over the last five
years, we've been able to perpetuate realtime 3D on alternative platforms and
in new areas such as urban simulation and 3D GIS, allowing us to continue to
focus on our core technology while extending the use of realtime 3D
simulation."

Panoram Technologies, Inc.
"Panoram sees tremendous potential for cooperative sales and marketing
with Sun Microsystems' visualization products. Its commitment to
high-performance graphics, massive install base, and highly competitive
workstation pricing is ideal for bringing 3D visualization to the desktop. The
Sun Blade 1000 workstation, as well as the Sun(TM) Ultra 60 and 80
workstations, are a perfect match for Panoram's PV230 DSK and PV290 Desktop
Visualization offerings. The combination of the products is truly awesome! We
are both excited and enthusiastic about the work we are doing together with
Sun to broaden the applications and acceptance of this important high-end
niche of technical computing."

Side Effects Software
"Our customers have been looking for more choices in their 3D animation
hardware solutions, and porting Houdini to Sun's Solaris Operating Environment
makes this a reality for them," said Paul Salvini, CTO of Side Effects
Software. "It is our goal to continue making our software solutions more
useful, efficient and powerful for our growing customer base. Having already
added support for Linux and 64-bit processors in 1999, porting to the Solaris
platform was very straightforward. The development tools on Sun are
outstanding and they contributed significantly to our productivity during the
porting effort."

TGS
"Open Inventor 3.0 from TGS acts as an enabler for customers who are
interested in running immersive environments on Sun platforms. TGS and VRCO
have worked closely together to give customers a choice in application
programming interfaces when visualizing their data in immersive environments.
There are a significant number of applications currently being distributed on
Sun platforms and the release of Open Inventor 3.0 from TGS will enable these
applications to now operate in an immersive environment."

Trimension Systems
"Sun's advanced servers and graphics technology combined with Trimension's
immersive visualization solutions are breaking the corporate data bottleneck
by allowing teams of people to work together. Remote collaboration across
multiple immersive visualization facilities is now a reality. Interaction via
human friendly interfaces, such as Isotope, are breaking down the
technological barrier to working with the data and removing the
programmer/keyboard, allowing the real user of the data to work with it as
they wish."

VRCO
"At VRCO, we have been working with Sun Microsystems and TGS, Inc. to
address customer needs in the oil and gas industry. With the introduction of
the threaded versions of the CAVELib and Open Inventor on the Solaris
platform, there is a high performance, multi-screen option that is stable,
reliable and available at an affordable price. VRCO has seen a steady increase
in the visualization market as business and industries realize the power of
this technology to deal with the ever-increasing amounts of information.
Sun's attention to this market brings significant capabilities in unifying the
needs to store large amounts of data with the ability to actually use that
data with products like the CAVELib."
