MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA USA
SIGGRAPH, LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- UGS, (NYSE: UGS), whose
VisConcept(TM) software allows human-scale visualization of high-resolution,
realistic, 3D designs, today announced the launch of VisConcept 2.0 for the
SGI(TM) (NYSE: SGI) IRIX(R) operating system.
VisConcept, originally introduced last year, replaces physical prototypes
with realistic, interactive, one-to-one-scale virtual prototypes in such
immersive environments as visualization rooms, visualization wall displays and
desks. A scalable virtual prototyping solution, it enables manufacturing teams
to experience, evaluate and explore product designs for formal or ad hoc
reviews, dramatically reducing product design time and the need for physical
prototypes.
VisConcept 2.0 features new texture mapping and editing functionality,
enhanced light and material editors, dynamic retessellation and lightweight
mirroring. These features, combined with the unparalleled graphics power of
the SGI(TM) Onyx(R) 3000 series visualization systems, results in one of the
most powerful digital prototyping solutions currently available.
"SGI values its relationship with UGS and is particularly proud to be
associated with such a strong design package for manufacturing environments,"
said Elizabeth Lippitt, senior marketing director, manufacturing industries,
SGI.
"SGI hardware provides the power and high-end rendering capabilities
VisConcept customers demand in the manufacturing market," added Joe Lindwall,
VisConcept marketing manager for UGS. "We are pleased to have SGI as an
important part of the VisConcept Version 2.0 rollout, and we look forward to
our continued collaboration."

    VisConcept features three key modules:
-- VisConcept Layout is a graphical user interface (GUI)-based tool for
creating interactive virtual prototypes on desktop workstations that
can be viewed on the desktop or at a 1:1 immersive scale
-- VisConcept Presenter provides immersive interfaces for scene
interaction. Complex environments with multiple pipes and processors,
stereoscopic displays, interaction devices and head tracking are all
       supported
-- VisConcept Conference enables collaborative interaction with multiple
VisConcept sites, so geographically dispersed sites can participate and
       interact with VisConcept virtual prototypes

With VisConcept, designers can create compelling visuals in real time by
compositing video, 2D data and/or 3D data. Photo-realistic, 3D images of
product designs can be placed on top of static 2D photographs to create
believable compositions of a real-life scene. An integrated, GUI-based
behavior system brings these composited images to life as doors open, wheels
pivot and colors change at the click of a button.
VisConcept features realistic emulation of painted surfaces based on SGI
ClearCoat(TM) 360 technology, providing discerning stylists with the ultimate
in real-time emulation of painted surfaces for human-scale (1:1)
visualization.
