Providian Financial Corporation Announces Certification of SEC Filings

    SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Providian Financial
Corporation (NYSE: PVN) today announced that Joseph Saunders, Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer, and Anthony Vuoto, Vice Chairman and Chief Financial
Officer, certified the Company's 2001 Annual Report on Form 10-K, as amended,
and the Company's subsequent filings with the Securities and Exchange
Commission, pursuant to the SEC's June 27, 2002 order directing the chief
executive and chief financial officers of 947 public companies with annual
revenues greater than $1.2 billion to certify the accuracy of their companies'
SEC filings.  In addition, Saunders and Vuoto certified the Form 10-Q for the
second quarter of 2002, pursuant to Section 906 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of
2002.  Copies of the certifications made pursuant to the SEC order are
included in a Form 8-K filed by the Company today with the SEC, while copies
of the certifications made pursuant to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 are
included in the Form 10-Q for the second quarter of 2002, which was also filed
today.  Both filings will be available on the investor relations page of the
Company's web site (http://www.providian.com).
    An amended 2001 Annual Report on Form 10-K and an amended Form 10-Q for
the first quarter of 2002 were also filed by the Company today with the SEC in
response to comments received from the SEC in connection with their review of
the Company's recent public filings.  None of the Company's financial results
were required to be restated or adjusted as a result of the SEC comments.
    Copies of the amended filings, including "black lined" copies that show
all changes, will be made available on the investor relations page of the
Company's web site (http://www.providian.com).
