NEW YORK, NY USA
NEW YORK, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Twelve New York high school students,
will depart from John F. Kennedy International Airport tomorrow for Berlin,
Germany as part of a German Jewish-American exchange program. Organized by
the North American Boards of Rabbis (NABOR) and supported by Alliance, BMW,
the German American Solidarity Fund, Lufthansa and Siemens, the exchange
program is designed to foster a better understanding between the American
Jewish youth and young Germans. The exchange program comes at a time when the
relationship between the United States and Germany has been strained because
of the situation in the Middle East.

"The main goal of the program is to build a relationship between Germans
and Jewish-Americans," said Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum, Founder of the Program,
Director of NABOR, and Spiritual Leader of Temple Israel of Lawrence, New
York. "This relationship must not only be predicated on the past but on a
shared commitment to the future."
The students will spend two weeks in Berlin, one of Europe's most dynamic
capitals, where they will have the opportunity to experience German culture
firsthand in one of the fastest growing Jewish communities in Europe. During
their stay, the students will live with German families and visit places such
as German high schools, the German Parliament, the U.S. and Israeli Embassies,
the Berlin Wall, the Jewish Museum and the Saxonhouse Concentration Camp.
Students also will participate in discussions about recent global events,
including war, peace and social responsibility.
In April of this year, German students, who now are serving as hosts,
traveled to New York. During their time in the U.S., the students lived with
the Jewish-American students and their families, attending local schools,
learning about Jewish traditions, and visiting synagogues and New York
landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.

met with foreign minister Joschka Fischer to thank him for Germany's
unswerving support of Israel.
