- To prepare company for unprecedented worldwide nuclear industry growth
- Nick Liparulo to succeed Perez as Sr. VP, Westinghouse Nuclear Services
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Company
announced today it has appointed Ricardo G. (Ric) Perez to the newly
created position of senior vice president, Global Growth and Innovation, a
move aimed at preparing the company for significant growth within the
worldwide nuclear power industry.
Mr. Perez, who most recently served as senior vice president of
Westinghouse Nuclear Services, will begin his new position immediately. He
will be replaced in the role of senior vice president, Nuclear Services, by
Nick Liparulo, a 36-year Westinghouse veteran who most recently served as
vice president, Engineering Services.
In making the announcement, Westinghouse President and Chief Executive
Officer Aris Candris said growth within the nuclear power industry mandates
that Westinghouse plan for, rather than react to, marketplace conditions.
"In order to meet the world's increasing demands for electricity, we
cannot afford to take a 'wait-and-see' attitude toward the market," he
said. "We must proactively evaluate every aspect of our organization to
ensure that we are prepared to provide a large volume of new plants
throughout the world, while maintaining our high degree of commitment to
the existing fleet of operating nuclear plants. It also is essential for us
to analyze our approach to the various global markets we serve and to
evaluate our portfolio of products, services and technologies."
Dr. Candris likened the creation of a senior vice president of Global
Growth and Innovation position to the decision Westinghouse made in the
early 1990s to continue investments in new nuclear technology even though
the prospects for new plant construction at that time were minimal,
especially in the United States and Europe.
"Our decision to continue funding new plant designs even during lean
times for the nuclear industry has proven to be a good one as both the
AP600(TM) and AP1000(TM) nuclear power plants are design certified by the
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission," he said. "Likewise, we expect that the
creation of this new position will enable Westinghouse to maintain our
leadership position within the nuclear power industry."
Mr. Perez joined Westinghouse in 1981 and has held a number of
increasingly responsible global positions within the Nuclear Services
organization. During his career, he has represented Westinghouse in the
United States, United Kingdom and Belgium. He also has spent more than two
decades in direct support of operating nuclear plants, including a
three-year assignment as site services manager at the San Onofre Nuclear
Generating Station in California.
Mr. Liparulo comes to his new position from his previous role as vice
president, Engineering Services, for the Nuclear Services business unit.
Prior to his Engineering Services position, he served as vice president,
U.S./Asia Fuel, and vice president, Fuel Engineering, for the Nuclear Fuel
business unit.
Westinghouse Electric Company, a Toshiba Group company, is the world's
pioneering nuclear power company and is a leading supplier of nuclear plant
products and technologies to utilities throughout the world. Today,
Westinghouse technology is the basis for approximately one-half of the
world's operating nuclear plants.
