NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Volunteers of America will
showcase its newly renovated Duvernay Residence for formerly homeless men
and women at a news briefing on Thursday, August 17 at 11 a.m. at the
Duvernay Residence. As one of the largest nonprofit providers of quality
affordable housing, Volunteers of America is committed to providing
low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities with a decent and
affordable place to live. Nationally, Volunteers of America owns and
operates more than 300 affordable housing communities in 31 states that are
home to more than 20,000 people.
"This 70-unit residence marks the beginning of Volunteers of America's
'Coming Back Home' initiative that is working toward the goal of creating
more than 1,000 affordable housing rental units for working families and
residents of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina," said Jim
LeBlanc, president and chief executive officer of Volunteers of America of
Greater New Orleans.
The Duvernay Residence is a single room occupancy facility that will
house 70 men and women who were once homeless and are recovering from
substance abuse problems. The residence sustained four feet of water from
Hurricane Katrina. Sheetrock, electrical and plumbing fixtures were
replaced, and the entire building was repainted and new furniture was
purchased to accommodate 70 single-room apartments. Renovations were
completed within three months and residents will begin to move in this
week.
