SILVER SPRING, Md., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A generous contribution by
singer and songwriter Alanis Morissette is enabling one of the communities
most severely impacted by last December's earthquake and tsunamis to access
the critical economic opportunities they need to reestablish productive lives.
Through a partnership with the international development and humanitarian
relief organization CHF International, Alanis Morissette's $50,000 donation is
empowering a local community-based organization in Indonesia's Aceh province,
Udeb Saree Lhok Seudu, to undertake several important economic revitalization
projects that will provide tsunami victims with the resources they need to
thrive.
"We're delighted to be partnering with Alanis Morissette in our efforts to
restore the economic situation of those affected by last year's tragic
tsunamis," said John Chromy, CHF International's Vice President. "The support
of high-profile individuals like Alanis Morissette is extremely helpful for
sustaining public awareness about the long-term economic recovery efforts that
will be needed for years to come."
A large proportion of people in Banda Aceh rely on the fishing industry
for their livelihoods, but lost their boats and markets as a result of the
tsunamis. Alanis Morissette's partnership with CHF will provide local
community members in Aceh with the resources they need to get back on their
feet, through projects that will construct and repair fishing boats, fish
markets and docking facilities, and provide a variety of assistance to fish
traders, small shop vendors and farmers. The project will also create
numerous jobs, and will provide villagers with more food security throughout
the reconstruction process.
"I was extremely moved by the plight of tsunami victims and I was inspired
to try to make a difference," Alanis Morissette said about the project.
