PFA Launches 'Ginsburg Precedent' Video

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Progress for America (PFA) today
launched a video highlighting Ruth Bader Ginsburg's fair treatment during her
1993 confirmation hearings to coincide with its 14-state, 2-week "Precedent,
Not Politics" Roberts Confirmation Tour by 15 of Judge Roberts friends,
colleagues and legal experts.

"Judge John Roberts deserves the same respectful treatment during his
hearings as Clinton-nominee Ruth Bader Ginsburg," said Brian McCabe, president
of PFA. "This is about precedent for a fair process, not politics."
Despite her background as a very liberal ACLU attorney, the following are
facts about Justice Ginsburg's hearing:

    * Lasted a total of 4 days.

    * Ginsburg was not required to discuss her legal views on a host of
issues, including: abortion, gay rights, public education, labor laws,
religion and the state, the Second Amendment, and voting rights.

-- Then-Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Joseph Biden (D-DE)
warned fellow senators not to ask questions about "how
[Ginsburg] will decide any specific case that may come before
                 her."

-- When asked for specific opinions during confirmation
hearings, Ginsburg politely replied, "I prefer not to address
a question like that" and "I would prefer to await a
                 particular case."

    * Even Senators who strongly disagreed with Ginsburg's personal political
views voted for her confirmation. Justice Ginsburg was confirmed by the
      Senate on a vote of 96-3 (8/3/93).

Progress for America's "Precedent, Not Politics" Roberts Confirmation Tour
began August 16th and includes the following states: Michigan, Louisiana,
Montana, North Dakota, Colorado, Maine, Florida, Oregon, West Virginia,
Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Rhode Island, Washington and Nebraska.
