New RUP Plug-In for XP Offers Agile Best Practices That Enable Developers to
                           Write Better Code Faster

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rational User
Conference -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL) and Object Mentor Inc. today
announced the introduction of Rational Unified Process(R) guidance for Extreme
Programming (XP) through the RUP(R) Plug-In for XP.

This new plug-in enables developers to write better code faster by
providing workflows, guidelines and other resources that offer lightweight
best practices designed for developers' needs.
The RUP Plug-In for XP is a joint development project by Rational Software
and Object Mentor, a leading advocate of object-oriented technologies and
Extreme Programming, and one of the founding members of the Agile Alliance
(http://www.agilealliance.org/) with Rational Software.
The RUP Plug-In for XP broadens the set of guidance available for
developers by combining the strengths of the core elements of the Rational
Unified Process - including iterative development and the utilization of
component-based architectures - with XP's agile methodology. One of the
challenges of adopting a new process is identifying just the right amount of
artifacts and activities to include in each project. The RUP Plug-In for XP
jump-starts development for small and medium-sized teams with an
out-of-the-box set of practices, road maps and activities that help developers
focus on their core mission: generating high-quality, executable code.
"The RUP Plug-In for XP combines the basic principles of the Rational
Unified Process with the values and best practices of XP, enabling developers
to create software easier and better," said Robert C. Martin, chief executive
officer, president and founder, Object Mentor. "We believe that this plug-in
broadens the target audience for the Rational Unified Process by providing
access to XP techniques and disciplines within the framework of the Rational
Unified Process platform. We're very pleased to be working with Rational on
this initiative, and look forward to continuing our collaboration to provide
developers with the training, mentoring, skill-transition and leadership
necessary to help them get their projects done efficiently."
The Rational Unified Process is a platform of best practices that have
been proven by customers and industry leaders throughout thousands of
projects. It combines technology and domain-specific guidance with templates
and examples. The Rational Unified Process platform's configuration and
customization tools enable customers to right-size project guidance based on
their specific needs. The Web-based delivery mechanisms of the Rational
Unified Process ensure that RUP Plug-Ins are a natural extension of the
desktop, providing developers with seamless access to specific guidance.
"We're thrilled to have worked so closely with Object Mentor to create the
RUP Plug-In for XP," said Eric Schurr, chief marketing officer, Rational
Software. "Rational and Object Mentor share many of the same beliefs about
empowering developers to successfully complete their projects with just the
right amount of guidance. The Rational Unified Process, which can be tailored
to fit any project, liberates developers from the chaos that can be associated
with software projects, enabling them to create better software faster."
