Winning Songs Now Available to Teachers and Public for FREE Download -
Teachers Will Be Able to Incorporate Songs Into Reading Curriculum by
Accessing Artists for Literacy Website
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Artists for Literacy, which
promotes reading and adult literacy by producing high-quality CDs and DVDs
that feature songs inspired by literature, has announced the winners of its
third annual songwriting contest.
The winners, from Canada, Australia, and the U.S., are featured on the
Artists for Literacy Web site. Each song is available for free download, and
can be used as part of a teaching curriculum for literature classes,
http://www.artistsforliteracy.org . "After meeting with English teachers
around the country, I have a better understanding of what their challenges
are," said Artists for Literacy founder, Deborah Pardes. "By providing songs
inspired by literature, we hope to leverage pop culture in the classroom.
Imagine if a teacher could say 'headphones on!' instead of 'headphones off!'
I'd like AFL to become a 'clearing house' for all types of artwork inspired by
books. We'll provide not only the art, but lesson plans to support the use of
that art in set curriculum."
Artists for Literacy has produced CD's for sale in stores, schools,
libraries, and for community organizations to help raise funds and support
literacy programs nationwide. These CDs feature donated tracks written and
performed by artists known and unknown, including Bruce Springsteen,
Aimee Mann, Suzanne Vega, Tom Waits and David Bowie.
Artists for Literacy began as the SIBL (Songs Inspired by Literature)
Project in 2000. It is the brainchild of Pardes, a San Francisco
singer-songwriter, whose inspiration for this venture came through her writing
"7th Step," a song inspired by Frank McCourt's memoir Angela's Ashes. "When I
discovered just how many people struggle with the ability to read, I decided
to extend my impact as an artist," she says. "Musicians have championed world
problems before. Now more than ever, literacy needs our magic and power."
AFL is currently producing a prototype of their new education DVD for
parents and teachers.
