CalPOP.com: Rags to Riches: Low Cost Servers and 3D Gaming Propel LA Data Center into the Spotlight

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In the year 2000, right in the middle
of the dot com crash, three guys: Lynn Hoover, Evert Van Niekerk, and Ross
Thiers, who all moved to LA with no money in their pockets, started an
internet data center -- CalPOP.com. With no investment and against all
possible odds, the three "Co-Presidents" started a full service internet data
center in downtown Los Angeles which is now doing millions in revenues and is
the largest dedicated server company in Los Angeles, hosting thousands of
servers and is considered by many to be the fastest network in Los Angeles
with redundant gigabit fiber lines to Level3, XO, and Wiltel.
"CalPOP was one of the first companies doing the $99 per month server
specials offering generous amounts of bandwidth and a dedicated internet
server to host websites on for $99 per month. The company has gradually grown
from 1 server in 2000 to several thousand servers today," says Evert, who
moved to Los Angeles in 1999 from South Africa without a dime in his pocket.
The company has grown to 20 employees and is open 24/7/365 but is still run by
its three co-presidents: Lynn, Evert, and Ross!
"Small businesses everywhere want a secure server that their employees can
access from home and where they can put their websites. This, plus the growing
market for 3D gaming servers has really catapulted our company to the
forefront," says Lynn Hoover -- who co-founded CalPOP.com after years of
struggling in LA as a musician. "We were really lucky in that we were able to
buy routers and switches and everything we needed for pennies on the dollar
from all the failed dot coms in order to build our data center," says Ross,
whose family moved to Los Angeles from Cambodia during the Vietnam War.
CalPOP now has hundreds of telecom "cabinets" filled with servers in its
new 8,500 square foot data center at 600 W. 7th Street in downtown Los
Angeles. "The secret is our Low Ping times and our excellent Peering and 24
hour support," says Lynn. And the future? "We are putting servers online as
fast as we can build them!" says Ross.
