Outbound Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel to Open Saturday

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- PENNDOT and Trumbull Corporation will
reopen the outbound Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel at 9:00 a.m., Saturday,
August 23. At that time, both the inbound and outbound lanes will be open to
traffic traveling in and out of downtown Pittsburgh and the Strip District, or
continuing on I-279. Motorists heading to I-376 east (Parkway East) from
I-279 south will continue to follow the posted detour via Route 51 and the
West End Bridge until the construction of Fort Pitt Bridge ramp to I-376 east
(Parkway East) is completed in October.
Eastbound traffic traveling on I-279 south will exit at Route 51 south,
just before the entrance to the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Traffic will then follow
Route 51 south to the West End and Fort Duquesne Bridges to the interstate
connector and merge onto I-376 east (Parkway East).
Work areas remaining after August 23 also include the Route 51 turnaround
and signals at West Liberty Avenue, Route 51 bridge painting, the Route 51/
I-279 crossover, restoration of the Liberty Tunnel and McArdle Roadway
intersection, and reconstruction of the island at the intersection of Fort
Pitt Boulevard and Commonwealth Place.
These changes will conclude the $84-million bridge and tunnel
reconstruction, the final phase of the ten-year, $200+ million project.
