Digital Surveillance Dilemma Facing Law Enforcement Addressed at CMP Entertainment Media's GVExpo

GVExpo November 30 Keynote Address To Focus on In-Car Video Techniques

NEW YORK, Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- For law enforcement agencies, digital
In-car video cameras offer a number of unique advantages, but the image
quality can be questionable and management of digital files can be a
formidable challenge. The dilemma many face in evaluating analog vs. digital
tools for video surveillance is the topic of CMP Media's GovernmentVideo and
Technology (GVExpo) Keynote Address.
Mike Fergus, of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)
and the Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Association (LEVA) will present
the Keynote Address, November 30 at 10:30 am.
Now in its eighth year, GVExpo is the premier government video, broadcast,
AV, and multimedia event, and is sponsored by GovernmentVideo and Videography
magazines. The three-day event includes a show floor featuring more than 300
exhibitors; free educational sessions and hands-on demonstrations in the Tech
Focus Forum; the Digital Signage Zone; the Collaborative Communications
Solutions Center; and two separate conferences, the GovernmentVideo Conference
Program and DigitalMediaDC (DMDC). Admission to the GVExpo exhibit hall and
in-hall educational sessions including the Keynote Address and Tech Focus
Forum is free for registered attendees. The two conference programs require
separate registration.
"We're very excited to have Mike Fergus as our keynote speaker. He's
really on the cutting edge of in-car camera technology and policy," says
Michael Silbergleid, GovernmentVideo Conference Program chair. "This is an
important and controversial topic for the law enforcement community. At the
same time, the digital technologies that public safety departments have
started to implement are relevant for a number of other government video
projects," Silbergleid continues.
Fergus is the technical assistance coordinator for the IACP In-car
Camera/Video Evidence Project and president of LEVA, also having served on
LEVA's Scientific Working Group on Imaging Technology. He is a member of the
American Society for Industrial Security, the International Association for
Identification, and the Security Industry Association CCTV Industry Group,
Digital Video Server Standards subcommittee.
In his Keynote Address, Fergus will discuss recent IACP research efforts,
as well as funding and industry standards issues. In addition, he will explore
the issues of in-car camera systems using real examples from the road.
In 2004 the IACP In-Car Camera/Video Evidence Project researched in-car
camera use by 22 state agencies. The IACP team has developed a comprehensive
training program for police executives and prosecutors on the effective
implementation of in-car video programs, and is currently working with
industry, law enforcement, legal, and scientific experts to develop IACP
minimum performance specifications for digital mobile video systems.
For more than 20 years, Fergus has been designing and producing video and
film training programs for various organizations. He has a bachelor's degree
in radio/television with a concentration in instructional media design from
the University of Houston. He spent 11 years as the senior communications
specialist at the Houston Police Department, producing training and
communications programs. He was also assigned to a special projects group
responsible for developing training strategies and advising the police chief
on agency-wide technology issues, specifically the acquisition and
implementation of forensic video analysis technology.
GVExpo will be held November 30 and December 1 at the Washington DC
Convention Center. The keynote address open to all registered attendees and
will take place at the Presentation and Keynote Theater on the show floor.
