Raytheon Selected for Additional Advanced Gun System Land Attack Projectile Development

    TUCSON, Ariz., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTNA; RTNB)
has been selected by United Defense, L.P. (UDLP), of Arlington, Va., to
continue work on the Advanced Gun System (AGS) Land Attack Projectile.
    The $20.3 million contract with option covers a 28-month concept
demonstration period, which will culminate in a flight test of a 155-mm land
attack guided projectile.  The agreement is a follow-on to a one-year concept
evaluation contract with UDLP.  Raytheon's work will be carried out at its
Missile Systems business unit in Tucson, Ariz.
    "During concept demonstration, we will leverage the expertise from our
Extended Range Guided Munition (ERGM) and Excalibur (XM982) programs, as well
as the extensive development work we are conducting in our advanced programs
division," said Ken Pedersen, Raytheon Missile System's vice president for
advanced programs.  "Our ultimate guided projectile vision is to have
commonality across all three programs."
    The AGS is a new design 155-mm naval gun that will be the main battery for
the new U.S. Navy "Zumwalt" class of land attack destroyers (DD21).  AGS will
have the capability of supporting ground troops ashore with precision accuracy
and with the goal of a maximum range of 100 nautical miles.
