Rains Reduce Fire Danger; Willamette Industries Re-Opens Forestland For Walk-in Access

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Willamette Industries today
announced the re-opening of its forestland statewide for foot traffic,
following a week of cool, wet weather that has reduced fire danger in western
Oregon.
Jim James, Willamette's general manager of western timberlands, said
company land will remain open until further notice. He said Willamette
foresters are monitoring fire conditions daily and will adjust access
according to fire danger.
The news comes just in time for bow hunters, whose season opens Saturday,
Aug. 25.
"We are pleased we can accommodate bow hunters on opening weekend," James
said. He noted, however, that many gates will remain closed because current
access is for "walk-in" traffic only. "Motor vehicles are not allowed at this
time," he said. "In addition, no camping and no fires are allowed on
Willamette land at any time.
"We would like to thank the public for their support and remind everyone
that current fire conditions still warrant caution," James said.
Willamette Industries is Oregon's largest private forest landowner with
610,000 acres, stretching from Clatsop to Douglas counties.
