Joseph M. Calo Appointed Chairman of the Spectra Systems' Technology Advisory Board

    PROVIDENCE, R.I., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- SPECTRA SYSTEMS today announced
that Joseph M. Calo, Professor of Engineering at Brown University, has assumed
the position of Chairman of Spectra's Technology Advisory Board, effective
September 1, 2001.
    Mr. Calo has over 30 years of experience in chemical engineering and has
participated on or led research projects throughout the world for both
commercial and academic organizations.  He has co-authored books on multiphase
chemical reactors and separation science in both Europe and the US.  He has
consulted on many private and government development projects for entities
ranging from the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory to IBM.
    "Dr. Calo's extensive chemical physics experience and leadership will be
invaluable to us as we develop new materials for our marking, tracking,
sensing and security-based systems," said Nabil Lawandy, Ph.D., Chief
Executive Officer of Spectra Systems. "Joe has already been a catalyst to many
of our development projects as a member of the Technology Advisory Board.  He
will now drive the board to even greater assistance of our technology team as
we rapidly expand our product offering to broadening markets."

    Dr. Calo has also received appointments as a visiting summer professor at
the Mobil Research and Development Company, as a research engineer at the
Exxon Research and Engineering Company, as a visiting scientist at the
University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland and as a visiting professor at
the Universidad de Alicante in Spain.  He received his Ph.D. in chemical
engineering from Princeton University in 1970 and a B.S. in chemical
engineering from the Newark College of Engineering in 1966.
    Dr Calo takes over the chairmanship from Dr. Leon Cooper, Professor of
Science at Brown University, whose term expired on August 1st.  Said Dr.
Lawandy of Dr. Cooper's tenure, "Leon contributed greatly in helping Spectra
