CONCORD, Mass., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Starmet Corporation (Nasdaq: STMT)
announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Starmet CMI, recently has
been awarded new contracts valued at approximately $1.25 million from a
U.K. customer and a U.S. customer for waste management services. Starmet will
use its patented DUCRETE(TM) technology to stabilize the customer's uranium
bearing waste materials.
DUCRETE(TM) technology was developed at the Department of Energy's Idaho
National Engineering Laboratory. Starmet has received exclusive commercial
rights to DUCRETE(TM) technology as part of a strategic alliance between
Starmet and Teton Technologies, a corporation located in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
In the DUCRETE(TM) process uranium materials are processed thermally into a
chemically stable form yielding a dense aggregate. The resulting material is
more environmentally stable than uranium metal or other reactive uranium
compounds. The process produces an aggregate product with improved leach
resistance and also reduces waste bulk density, economic advantages when the
waste is sent for geologic disposal. Starmet eventually plans to sell the
aggregate which, when combined with cement, forms a stable and economical
shielding for spent fuel and high-level radioactive waste products.
Starmet CMI, established in 1983 as Carolina Metals, Inc., provides
uranium metal products and related services to both the commercial and
government markets. Starmet Corporation is a diversified metallurgical
technology company based in Concord, Massachusetts.
