ST. LOUIS, Mo., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) has
introduced its third new continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) product in
the United States since November 1998. The company's new GoodKnight(R) 418G
home care system is designed to treat patients suffering from obstructive
sleep apnea, whose breathing is interrupted during sleep. If left untreated,
this problem can eventually lead to high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats
or even heart failure.
The GoodKnight 418G follows Mallinckrodt's GoodKnight 418 CPAP and
CloudNine(TM) auto-CPAP systems on the United States market within the past
year.
The compact GoodKnight 418G connects to a mask that patients wear during
sleep. Air pressure generated by the system prevents air passages from being
obstructed, which ensures that patient breathing is uninterrupted during the
night. The GoodKnight 418G has an adjustable ramp feature which allows
patients to begin the sleep cycle with only slight air pressure that increases
as they move more deeply into sleep. This is intended to improve comfort and
increase the likelihood of patients continuing to use the system.
The GoodKnight 418G is one of the quietest sleep apnea products in the
United States market. Its other advanced features include:
-- a 16-character LCD which makes the unit easy to operate
-- multiple power supply for overseas travel
-- direct DC input to work when connected to a 24V DC battery

The GK418G has been available in Europe since the spring of 1999. It is
Mallinckrodt's first CPAP system intended for sale worldwide.
