Effort brings together seven universities collaborating with Pro/ENGINEER(R)
Wildfire(TM) and Windchill(R) ProjectLink(TM) solutions to develop micro-
injection moulding machines
NEEDHAM, Mass., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the
Product Development Company(TM), today announced its partnership with the Hong
Kong Polytechnic University in a Hong Kong Government funded research and
development project for the advancement of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology,
also referred to as molecular manufacturing, is a branch of engineering that
deals with the design and manufacture of tiny electronic circuits and
mechanical devices built at the molecular level of matter.
As part of the deal, PTC will provide its product design and lifecycle
management solutions Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire and Windchill ProjectLink to Hong
Kong Polytechnic University. Hong Kong Polytechnic University will use
Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire and Windchill ProjectLink to collaborate with four
universities in China as well as universities worldwide on a project to design
and manufacture a micro-injection moulding machine. The developed micro-
injection moulding machine will be used for the mass production of micro-
products that are currently limited in commercial availability.
"Micro-fabrication is widely viewed as the most significant manufacturing
technological frontier currently being explored," said Dr. Lau, co-
investigator of the project/lecturer of the Industrial & Systems Engineering
Department, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. "This project capitalizes on
the world's first rock corer on the Planet Mars and will result in machines
capable of manufacturing micro-components for use in growing hi-tech
industries such as telecommunications and biomedical engineering."
According to Dr. Lau, the streamlined sharing of project data amongst the
collaborating parties using PTC solutions will cut approximately 40 percent of
time off the planning, monitoring and control process of the project, allowing
for more time and resources to be invested in the actual technical development
of the machines.
Seamless web connectivity will ensure that the university project teams
have access to the resources, information, and capabilities they need -- from
conceptual design to tooling development and machining -- throughout the
duration of the project.
"PTC is delighted to contribute our industry leading solutions to this
pioneering project. Our product development system is used by thousands of
organizations globally to develop cutting-edge products. This project is
expected to make a significant contribution to the commercial application of
nanotechnology and will position Hong Kong and China at the forefront of this
groundbreaking industry," Steve Su, Divisional VP, North Asia, PTC.
Windchill ProjectLink and Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire are core components of the
PTC(R) Product Development System. Windchill ProjectLink will provide a
virtual workspace/central access point for project team members --
collaborators from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Wilfred Laurier
University, Canada; University of Liverpool, UK; Huazhong University of
Science Technology, China; Harbin Institute of Technology, China; Ningbo
University, China and Guangdong University of Technology -- to access the
right information at the right time.
Each of the collaborators will be contributing their own particular area
of expertise to the project. For example, the University of Liverpool will
ensure the rest of the team are up to date with the latest advancements in
nanotechnology, through data sharing via Windchill ProjectLink.
Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire is a product design and development solution that
will be used, for example, by engineers and researchers from Ningbo University
to design moulding parts using CAD/CAM technology.
