CNG Producing High Bidder on 7 Tracts, Including 4 in Deep Water, In Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 171

    PITTSBURGH, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- CNG Producing Company, acting alone or
with partners, was high bidder on seven tracts, including four in deep water,
at the Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 171 held yesterday in New Orleans.
CNG Producing's share of the bids totaled $5.7 million.
    The company, with partners, was high bidder on Garden Banks 213 and 841,
and East Breaks 875 and 876, all located in water depths between 1,500 and
3,900 feet.
    CNG Producing was ranked third in oil and gas production in water depths
greater than 1,500 feet for 1997, behind Shell Deepwater Development Inc. and
BP Exploration Inc., according to a study published by Offshore magazine.  In
addition to the high bids submitted yesterday, the company currently owns
28 leases in the deep water.
    CNG Producing was also high bidder for 100 percent of  three tracts in the
shallow water on the Continental Shelf:  High Island A-173, High Island A-174
and Mustang Island A-136.
    As is customary, the high bids will be reviewed by the Minerals Management
Services (MMS) of the U.S. Department of the Interior before leases are
awarded.
