Innovative Technology Retailer Makes Tax Pill Easier to Swallow
WHO: Residents of 45 states who buy a new PC in a Gateway Country store
WHAT: Will effectively not be charged sales tax, by receiving a discount
equal to the sales tax rate
WHEN: Tuesday, Aug. 29 through Thursday, Aug. 31
WHERE: In any of the 285 Gateway Country stores in states that collect
sales tax (the offer is not available for shipment to states that
do not collect sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire
and Oregon).
Earlier this month the states of Pennsylvania and South Carolina declared
sales tax relief periods on personal computers as a way to improve access to
technology for their residents. Public response in both states was
overwhelming.
As a company focused on helping people get more out of technology, Gateway
supported these state efforts and now is extending the benefit of sales tax
discounts to all states that collect sales tax.
"A new PC can open up exciting new possibilities for people, but paying
sales tax on a PC can take some of the fun out of it," said Cliff Holtz,
senior vice president of Gateway's Consumer division. "Taxes are a fact of
life, but we think offsetting sales tax in the form of a discount is a novel
way to make them a little more palatable."
The offer applies only to Gateway consumer systems purchased in Gateway
Country stores by Thursday, Aug. 31. The discount does not apply to software
or peripherals, or to shipping and handling charges, or to purchases made via
1-800-GATEWAY or http://www.gateway.com.
