RENO, Nev., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Elizabeth Taylor has signed
an agreement with gaming manufacturer IGT (NYSE: IGT), giving the company the
right to develop a gaming machine using her name and image.
"Elizabeth Taylor is one of the most famous and celebrated women of our
time, and we're honored that she has agreed to work with us," said Rich
Pennington, IGT's executive vice president of product design. Pennington
would not release details about the Elizabeth Taylor machine but did say that
it would be as unique and beautiful as its namesake.
IGT will exhibit a prototype of the machine at the Global Gaming Expo in
Las Vegas in mid-September. "Designing a game called Elizabeth Taylor is like
designing a game for Helen of Troy," said Joe Kaminkow, head of game design
for IGT, "so we're working overtime to make it extraordinary."
In the public eye since age 9, Taylor has made six dozen films, received
five Academy Award nominations and won three Oscars, two for Best Actress in
Butterfield 8 and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf as well as the Jean Hersholt
Humanitarian Award.
Taylor was among the first -- and, quite possibly, was the first -- to
feel the glare of celebrity superstardom, and she holds the record -- at 11 --
for the most appearances on the cover of Life Magazine.
Less well known was Taylor's lifelong commitment to humanitarian causes
until the death of her good friend, Rock Hudson, when she became one of the
first major celebrities to go public with her support for AIDS awareness. In
1985, she co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) and, in
1993, established the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Thus far, Taylor and
the foundations she helped build, have helped raise an estimated $64 million
to fight the disease.
Since 1986, Elizabeth Taylor has launched a series of successful fragrance
lines, that include brands like White Diamonds, Forever Elizabeth and
Gardenia, all of which have loyal fans from around the globe.
In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made the London-born Taylor a Dame of the
British Empire, a true highlight of an already amazing life and career.
