WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a
statement from Karen Ignagni, President and CEO of America's Health
Insurance Plans (AHIP), on the new numbers released today by the U.S.
Census Bureau which show that the number of uninsured Americans rose from
44.8 million in 2005 to 47 million in 2006.

"Now more than ever Congress and the states need to act to ensure that
all Americans have access to health care coverage. Forty-seven million
Americans cannot afford to wait until after the next election to address
this critical issue. Congress can take an important first step by
reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which provides
a vital health care safety net for low-income children."
Last November, AHIP put forth a comprehensive plan to expand access to
health care coverage to all Americans. The AHIP plan would shore up the
health care safety net, give working families a helping hand in affording
coverage, enable all taxpayers to purchase health insurance with pre-tax
dollars, and provide incentives to states to expand access to coverage. For

AHIP is the national trade association representing nearly 1,300 member
companies providing health insurance coverage to more than 200 million
Americans.
