RootCause Promotes Rapid Problem Resolution and Decreases Support Costs
for C/C++ and Java Enterprise Applications
FAIRFAX, Va., Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- OC Systems, Inc. today announced the
Windows 2000/NT/XP version of RootCause(TM), a software package that helps
find the cause of application failures faster, increasing availability. In an
approach similar to that used by airplane flight recorders, RootCause
continually records data about a program's execution as it runs. When a
problem or failure occurs, the information that has been collected is
transmitted to support staff via e-mail or FTP. Support engineers or
developers can read this "flight log," step through the operations that led up
to the problem, and identify the root cause, in many cases, from a single
occurrence.
RootCause works on the executable at runtime. No changes are made to the
source code or to any application files on disk, and there is no need to
recompile or re-link the application. As a result, RootCause can be used on
all components of an application, even those for which source code is not
available, making it a useful tool for enterprises, service providers, systems
integrators and other solution providers supporting complex applications.
"With the introduction of our Windows version, RootCause provides the most
complete solution on the market today," said Oliver Cole, president of OC
Systems. "RootCause runs on Unix and Windows, can be used on C/C++ and Java
applications, and because it works at runtime provides the ability to trace
the entire application, even dynamically generated code."
RootCause is designed to be non-intrusive, adding little overhead to the
system that is being traced. The user defines what is traced, controlling the
impact on performance. Additionally, if only one end user is having problems,
it is possible to trace just that user's execution, leaving everyone else
unaffected.
RootCause provides a holistic view of a production system, with operating
system, application and environment information available in one view. All
levels of support staff and developers can use the same flight log, drilling
down to find the exact information required. Since system-level information
is included, even if the cause of a failure is not inside the application --
in the hardware, network, database, middleware, operating system, or
communications infrastructure -- RootCause can identify the source.
RootCause is built on top of Aprobe, OC Systems' flagship development
tool, and takes advantage of Aprobe's capabilities to provide additional power
and flexibility. Traces can be conditional, contingent upon certain events,
or data-dependent. Additional information that would be useful for problem
determination, such as timing or memory tracking, can be obtained. Aprobe
also offers the ability to implement patches that test a fix and can be left
in to temporarily solve a problem until it is convenient to install a new
build.
Availability
A beta version of RootCause for C/C++ and Java applications running in
Windows 2000/NT production environments is available now. The Windows XP
version will be available in October. A free demonstration copy can be
obtained from http://www.ocsystems.com/demo.html or by calling 703-359-8160.
RootCause for Solaris is already available, and a Linux version is scheduled
to be announced later this year.
