Winn-Dixie is implementing its "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" program in
all its stores as a way to assist the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund
to benefit storm victims. The program, which will begin tomorrow (August 30),
is an easy, convenient way for customers to help victims impacted by Hurricane
Katrina.
When a Winn-Dixie customer is checking out at the register, he or she may
donate directly to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by simply
telling the cashier how much they want to add to their total bill.
Hurricane Katrina hit South Florida on August 25-26, damaging homes and
businesses along its path, leaving an estimated 1.5 million residents in
Broward, Dade and Monroe counties without power or dealing with storm damage.
The hurricane strengthened as it cut across the Gulf of Mexico and lashed the
coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The powerful
storm caused massive damage from wind and rain more than 100 miles inland from
the Gulf Coast.
"Our neighbors face a long and difficult recovery process, and we want to
do everything we can to help them," said Terry Derreberry, Winn-Dixie Director
of Communications and Neighborhood Marketing. "As a business leader and
members of the community, we at Winn-Dixie value the opportunity to assist the
neighborhoods we serve in times of crisis."
The American Red Cross provides immediate response in more than 70,000
disasters each year through its Disaster Relief Fund. Disasters include
fires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Contributions to the
relief fund are used to provide food, shelter, counseling and other assistance
to victims, as needed.
