NEW YORK, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2004 Republican National Convention
today announced that three family members of September 11 victims will give
brief remarks as part of Monday evening's program: "A Nation of Courage."
Today, the convention is paying tribute to the courage of a nation that has
seen unprecedented challenges over the last three and a half years and the
President who led the nation through these historic times.
Deena Burnett of Little Rock, Arkansas is a mother of three young
daughters whose husband, Tom Burnett, was a passenger on United Airlines
flight 93 that crashed in a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001. Through
a series of telephone calls from the airplane to Deena, Tom learned of the
attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He then organized a group
of passengers and crew members to storm the cockpit in an effort to reclaim
the airplane. Deena has become a well known voice for the victims' families
of September 11. She successfully spearheaded an effort to have the flight 93
cockpit voice recorder released in April 2002, and is currently the lead
plaintiff in an unprecedented lawsuit to bankrupt terrorist organizations,
foreign governments, and dignitaries who knowingly fund them. Deena presently
serves as the President of the Tom Burnett Family Foundation, a public charity
she established to educate children to become good citizens and tomorrow's
leaders. She is also writing a book entitled, "Fighting Back".
Debra Burlingame is the sister of Charles F. "Chic" Burlingame, III,
captain of American Airlines flight 77, which was crashed at the Pentagon on
Sept. 11, 2001. Her brother, Charles, was the pilot of the plane that
crashed into the Pentagon. Debra Burlingame is a socially liberal, lifelong
Democrat who supported Al Gore in 2000. However, she has said, "To me, the
top priority is national security...and (Bush) is a terror warrior." She has
written editorials in support of the President's efforts to combat terrorism.
Tara Stackpole of Marine Park, Brooklyn is a mother of five children whose
husband, Fire Captain Timothy Stackpole, was killed in the World Trade Center.
Timothy was first recognized for his heroism after surviving an East New York
inferno in 1998 that killed two firefighters. He was left critically injured
and underwent months of rehabilitation, dozens of surgeries, and painful skin
grafts. He made it back to active duty, promoted to captain at Division 11 in
Downtown Brooklyn just days before he died. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani called him
"one of the most exceptional human beings I've ever met."
The 2004 Republican National Convention will be held for the first time
ever in New York City at Madison Square Garden from August 30 - September 2,
2004. Nearly 50,000 visitors are expected to visit the city for the occasion.
