TUCSON, Ariz., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTNA, RTNB)
has received a contract with options worth a potential $49.6 million from the
U. S. Navy to provide engineering and manufacturing design work and testing
for the Land Attack STANDARD Missile (LASM).
The work, which will be done at Raytheon's Missile Systems business unit
in Tucson (86 percent) and at its Air Combat and Strike Systems business unit
in El Segundo, Calif. (14 percent), is expected to be complete by December
2003.
LASM will be deployed on the Navy's AEGIS cruisers and destroyers. It is
designed to provide ground forces with long-range, rapid and precise fire
support. Its low radar cross-section and high-altitude, high-velocity flight
profile make it almost invisible to enemy air defenses.
The LASM concept was demonstrated in 1997 and 1998 during a series of
tests. The program completed three successful flight tests at White Sands
Missile Range, N.M., demonstrating Global Positioning System/Inertial
Navigation System guidance, vertical approach and warhead detonation at a
pre-determined height. In addition, there were several warhead arena tests
that validated LASM's lethality against a wide variety of ground targets.
Raytheon has been working on a LASM program definition and risk reduction
contract since August 1999.
The Navy will make older STANDARD Missile 2 Block IIs and IIIs available
for retrofit to the LASM configuration, resulting in a major cost savings for
round procurement.
