Remarks by Gideon Yago and Suchin Pak and Introduction of Stand Up and Holla
Winner Princella Smith
NEW YORK, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ --
YAGO: Hi, I am Gideon Yago.
PAK: And I am Suchin Pak.
YAGO: We are both from MTV News and very excited to be here. As part of
our Choose or Lose campaign to get 20 million young people to the polls in
November, for the first time ever MTV partnered with both the Democratic and
Republican parties in national essay contests, to give a young person the
opportunity to speak in prime time at each convention.
PAK: The Republican contest, Stand Up and Holla, asked young people to
write about the importance of President George W. Bush's call to service and
how they have demonstrated that call in their own communities. Nearly 1,000
young adults from across the nation submitted essays. The field was then
narrowed to 10 finalists, and the public logged on to MTV.com and
GOPconvention.com to vote for their favorites. More than 100,000 votes were
cast -- just one sign of the power of youth!
YAGO: And the winner is an incredible young woman who named her essay
Generation X-Ample. She is 20 years old and majoring in History and Political
Science at Ouachita Baptist University in the great city of Arkadelphia,
Arkansas. So we are pleased to welcome her, to let her voice and the voice of
young voters everywhere be heard. Ladies and Gentlemen, Princella D. Smith!
