Largest East Coast Gathering for the World's Electronics Engineering Elite to
Address Industry's Hottest Technologies Topics - from RFID Security and
Privacy, to Advanced Remote Control Technologies, to Safety and Legal Issues
Facing Embedded Systems Designers
BOSTON, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CMP Media's 14th annual Embedded
Systems Conference Boston (http://www.esconline.com/boston), will run September
12-15, 2005 at the Hynes Convention Center, and will feature four days of
sessions aimed at providing critical updates to the industry's "Creators of
Technology" -- design engineers and engineering management who take the first
steps in creating cutting-edge breakthroughs driving our global economy and
influencing the way we work, live and play.
Some of the most talked about technologies in development today will be
the focal point of this year's conference. The controversial subject of RFID
(Radio-Frequency Identification) technology will be addressed at the event's
keynote by Avi Rubin, professor of computer science and technical director of
the Information Security Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and the
founder of Independent Security Evaluators (Tuesday, September 13,
10:15-11:30 a.m.). RFID enables small wireless tags to identify merchandise,
control inventory, enable online purchases, reduce car theft -- the US
government is even considering putting RFID tags in passports, and several
states are examining RFIDs for driver's licenses. Rubin will address
"Security and Privacy Issues in RFID Technologies" describing the two types of
RFID systems in use today and the security and privacy concerns introduced by
these and future applications.
Another hot topic being explored at this year's conference is "Network
Updates of Remote Embedded Systems," presented by Kris Ardis, senior software
engineer for Dallas Semiconductor/Maxim (Tuesday, September 13 at 8:30 a.m.).
Embedded systems are becoming more and more network enabled, bringing us
closer to an age where servicing can be done over the Internet, eliminating
the need for service calls when software needs bug fixes or feature upgrades.
This technology enables home electronics to be updated by the factory or
remote equipment in a farm field, on an oil platform or even in space to be
upgraded or fixed remotely, without costly (or impossible) service visits.
The session will address challenges to the technology, and identify several
pitfalls of performing remote network upgrades, illustrating possible
solutions.
Safety is a leading concern for today's engineer and the theme will be
addressed at two sessions led by David Kalinsky, director of customer
education at Enea Embedded Technology (Tuesday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m. and
3:30 p.m.). "Principles of Safety-Critical Systems Design" will educate
engineers on designing embedded systems that are completely safe for users and
the environment. In the case of technology like medical equipment, elevators,
large machinery, or passenger vehicles, it is crucial for designers to
understand proper hazard and risk analysis techniques -- as electronics creep
into everyday life, it's more important than ever to make sure that these
devices are totally safe and reliable.
Other sessions highlight key topics that engineers can only get at ESC
Boston. "Legal Issues for Embedded Systems Developers," presented by Edmund
Walsh, counsel for Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks PC (Thursday, September 15 at
1:00 p.m.) will allow engineers, business managers and entrepreneurs to gain
crucial understanding on the basics faced in developing and marketing embedded
systems -- including simple techniques for avoiding legal pitfalls, a
discussion on benefits and strategy of using intellectual property for
business advantage, explore the use of patents to control new designs, cover
antitrust issues, and legal issues arising out of the inherent conflict
between standardized and proprietary products.
