SPECTRUM Licenses Sun-Netscape Alliance Directory and Security Products

Deal Allows SPECTRUM to Offer Directory-Enabled Networking Solutions

DURHAM, N.H. and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- SPECTRUM,
a division of Cabletron Systems (NYSE: CS), and the Sun-Netscape Alliance
today announced that SPECTRUM will bundle Alliance directory and security
Internet infrastructure software with SPECTRUM policy management applications.
The combined solution allows SPECTRUM to offer fully-integrated
directory-enabled networking for routers, switches and other networking
products from Cabletron Systems and third-party vendors. By leveraging the
Alliance directory, SPECTRUM's policy-based network management solution helps
enable e-commerce transactions and other mission-critical business operations
for companies competing in the Net Economy.
As part of the agreement, SPECTRUM will license the Alliance's iPlanet
Directory Server and iPlanet(TM) Certificate Management System to provide
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) support, access control,
centralized data storage, and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)-based user
authentication with SPECTRUM Policy Aware, a policy management solution.
"Directories have become a critical part of policy-based management in
e-commerce networks," said Stuart Wells, senior vice president of
infrastructure products for the Sun-Netscape Alliance. "SPECTRUM joins a
growing number of vendors gaining competitive advantage using iPlanet
Directory Server to directory enable their networking products."
SPECTRUM Policy Aware consists of three modules that address security,
quality of service, and routing policy demands. Initially, Policy Aware
applications will focus on the Cabletron SmartSwitch Router and other
SmartSwitch products. The second phase is expected to extend support for third
party switch, router, and DSL equipment.
"As companies look for new ways to leverage opportunities in the Net
Economy, directory-enabled policy-based networking becomes essential to
managing network allocations based on rapidly changing business objectives and
mission-critical applications, said SPECTRUM's executive vice-president,
Michael Skubisz. "The iPlanet Directory Server is an important element in our
policy management solution-set. We will use the directory as an open interface
not only for products that we build, but also to leverage third party
directory enabled applications." SPECTRUM Policy Aware applications are
expected to ship at the end of this year.
iPlanet Directory Server provides the performance, scalability, and
security features required for extranet and e-commerce applications,
supporting millions of users. By centralizing users, groups, policies and
access controls, it also simplifies administration and lowers costs. Network
administrators are able to make a change in the directory once and have it
pushed out automatically to all devices on the network. The directory also
allows administrators to customize access to the corporate network based on
each user's unique profile, as well as to configure multiple devices at once,
rather than each device individually.
The iPlanet Certificate Management System is a highly scalable
certificate-based security solution that helps protect sensitive data and
allows companies to expand the delivery of personalized services on the
Internet. The system builds on the scalable user management and access control
offered by iPlanet Directory Server and provides a cost-effective solution
that allows companies to issue, manage and revoke their own X.509v3 public-key
digital certificates.
