Innovation Boosts Ryder to Top 100 on InformationWeek 500 List

MIAMI, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ryder System, Inc. (NYSE: R),
a global leader in transportation and supply chain management solutions,
today announced it has been ranked in the Top 100 on the 2006
InformationWeek 500, a prestigious listing of the leading business users of
information technology. Ryder's exact rank will be revealed at a gala
awards ceremony held during the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Rancho
Mirage, Calif., from September 10-13.
"The InformationWeek 500 honors today's leading companies who set the
benchmark for business technology strategies and projects," said
InformationWeek Publishing Director Fritz Nelson. "The companies on our
list are some of the most innovative users of technology."
For the past 18 years, InformationWeek has identified and honored the
nation's most innovative users of information technology (IT) with its
annual listing. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it
spotlights the power of innovation in IT, rather than simply identifying
the biggest IT spenders. Companies named to this list demonstrate a pattern
of technological, procedural and organization innovation.
As part of the survey for the ranking, InformationWeek evaluated two
Ryder technology initiatives that were innovative, delivered business value
and improved productivity. The first was the Shop Maintenance System which
was enhanced using a service-oriented architecture to further streamline
maintenance operations and deliver greater value and customer service to
customers. The system provides a variety of reports and data for
technicians, vehicles and shop workload via an interactive information
dashboard to more than 700 Ryder maintenance facilities. As a result,
training time has been reduced from two weeks to two days, technicians
spend 20 percent less time on the system, and the number of diagnostics
screens has been reduced from 3,000 to 150.
The second initiative was RyderSTAR, a web-based safety tracking and
reporting system. This tool allows the effective communication of the
Company's safety goals and measurement of the productivity and
effectiveness of safety programs. As a leader in the transportation
industry, safety is a top priority for Ryder.
"Ryder is honored to be recognized by InformationWeek for the eighth
consecutive year for our leadership and innovation in technology solutions
for the transportation and supply chain industries," said Kevin Bott,
Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Ryder. "Through our
extensive experience in implementing and integrating transportation and
supply chain technology solutions and our reliable people, processes and
technology, we enable our customers to realize efficiencies in their
transportation and logistics operations and be more competitive."
